A dynamic by‐production framework for measuring productivity change in the presence of socially responsible and undesirable outputs: Evidence from European food processors

چکیده

In the past decade, corporate firms have globally increasingly adopted social responsibility (CSR) practices; however, so far less is known about how productivity change in presence of socially responsible and undesirable output can be evaluated. This paper develops a framework that integrates CSR dynamic by-production technology which captures transformation multiple inputs into marketed outputs, while accounting for adjustment costs quasi-fixed inputs. The illustrates method using sample European food beverage manufacturing firms. results empirical application show there decline Luenberger indicators mainly due to technical inefficiency change. Hence, should devise strategies enhance utilization resources reduce inefficiency. regression on firm-specific factors showed more indebted experienced lower growth output, whereas profitable variable higher investments. PRODUCTIVITY AND UNDESIRABLE OUTPUTS: A DIRECTIONAL DISTANCE FUNCTION APPROACH by

Undesirable outputs are often produced together with desirable. This joint production of good and bad outputs bring about a difficulty for productivity measurement. Here we introduce a directional distance function and use it as a component in a new productivity index. This index, as an empirical example shows, seems to solve the problem caused by the joint production of good and bad outputs. P...

Bayesian measurement of productivity and efficiency in the presence of undesirable outputs: crediting electric utilities for reducing air pollution

Many studies have measured productivity change and efficiency when an undesirable output is a by-product. We flexibly treat the bad as a technology shifter of an input distance function and model a system of nonlinear equations subject to endogeneity. Theory dictates that we impose monotonicity on all inputs, outputs, and the bad. Since a Bayesian full-information likelihood approach can easily...
